My name is Ken R. and I’m 12 years old. I’m from Victoria, BC. This is my story of fishing with Yves Bisson.
OMG! My trip was the best, best, best ever. We went sturgeon fishing with Yves Bisson on the Fraser River! I went with my dad and my little brother, Charlie (he's 6), and my sister Suzie (she's 10). Usually we just go trout fishing on Vancouver Island. Trout are okay, but they are tiny little fish! Sturgeon fishing is way more cool and exciting. They call sturgeon living dinosaurs because they are HUGE and ancient. We didn’t fish for the huge sturgeon, but just the ones me and my brother would be able to wind in.
When we got on the boat, I was so pumped. Yves put the bait on the hook for us and we didn’t even have to get our hands dirty. When a fish finally bit, the whole fishing pole bent SO much that I thought it was going to fly out of the boat! Even the ones that were kind of small fought like they were super mad. The biggest fish we caught was 120 cm long. That’s almost as tall as me! Me and Dad had to pull and pull and pull together. My arms were so tired, but it was the best kind of tired! Charlie even caught a 60 cm one by himself
We caught a HUGE number of fish. Ready? 17 sturgeon! Can you even believe that? I was super tired.
The best part was tagging the fish. Every time we caught a sturgeon, Yves checked its head for a tag. If it had one, he recorded the number. But if it had NO tag—that meant WE WERE THE FIRST humans to see it! We got to use a needle to put in a tag so that the scientists can track them for the rest of their lives.
We got to help tag 11 sturgeon that had never been tagged before! We even got to name them. We named the biggest new one "Thunder" because it made a huge splash when it jumped.
Sturgeon fishing is way better than catching boring old trout. I can’t wait to go back and get an even bigger dinosaur fish next year!
Thanks Yves for the best day ever.
